What are your favorite books?

I am looking for stuff to read.

What kind of stuff?

Anything really! Trying to expand my horizons.

I love anything by Christopher Moore, particularly Lamb and The Stupidest Angel.

Pride and Prejudice (or anything Austen) is one of my faves, but I know that's a personal taste thing, like most books are.

Catherine Coulter's FBI series if you want some mystery/cop thriller+some romance.

Most of Linda Howard's stuff if you want murder mysteries and a lot of romance.

Married With Zombies is the first in a trilogy by Jesse Petersen (followed by Flip This Zombie and Eat, Slay, Love.)

For fiction:
Small Gods by Terry Pratchett
A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge
Philip Reeve's Railhead trilogy
The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle

Nonfiction:
They Can Live in the Desert and Nowhere Else: A History of the Armenian Genocide by Ronald Suny
Dare Call it Treason: The True Story of the French Army Mutinies of 1917 by Richard Watt
This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentleman by Tadeusz Borowski

I have no idea why all my nonfiction is SO FREAKING HEAVY.

DA I read Suny's book on a rec here - yours, no doubt. It was a real eye-opener. My aunt had an Armenian boyfriend once, so I knew a little bit about it, but not much. Just ghastly, and almost forgotten now. :(

I blame politics. Quite a few Presidents have run on the promise to have Turkey acknowledge it only for them to be quietly pulled aside after they're elected and schooled in the art of holding one's nose to keep military bases in sensitive areas.

I'd never heard of that book before but I might have to read it now. I've had Armenian friends but I don't know that much about it either.

Rivers of London series: urban fantasy with complex characters of color, both divine and human. Main character is POC. Subverts/plays with a lot of urban fantasy tropes.

Kissing the Witch: all of the fairytales you grew up with, but wlw.

Good Omens, if you are planning on watching the Amazon series later this year.

Thanks for the recs! Not OP, but I've now ordered Kissing the Witch. That looks fun. And the cover doesn't make it obvious that it is about lesbians, so the parents won't look at me weird (they know my views, but I'm not out to them, have to be careful).

AYRT

Yay, hope you enjoy! Sending hugs your way (I'm not out to my family, either).

Anything Tolkien. Dune (first book only). All of the Kushiel books. Anything by N. K. Jemison. Earthsea books. The Book of Swords books. Anything by Timothy Zahn (his non-Star Wars stuff is just as amazing as his Star Wars books). Fire and Blood (Hands down my favorite Martin book). the Fionavar Tapestry books. The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series. Heinlein's juvenile books that are hilariously out of date in terms of technology but are still so much fun (his more adult books are better known, but the juveniles are just better stories).

I really love what I've read of Banana Yoshimoto's books (Kitchen, Hardboiled and Hard Luck, The Lake). It's a shame she's not as well known or loved as Murakami; I found the prose in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle a chore to get through, whereas Yoshimoto's style reads so easy and light. (I guess translation could be a factor here, though.)
