It's not automatically like that in the U.S either... movies and TV really portray a different image than the reality of it. Maybe 50 years ago it was easy to pay for school and living expenses fresh out of high school, but now-a-days?

Lot's of 18 year olds and young adults going to college cannot afford to live on their own on top of paying tuition/books/parking permit or whatever else they tack on the bill for students. I've known some people who tried to live on their own but after paying $500+ for books every semester, it's just more fiscally safe to live at home.
