Re: What is the first major news story you remember as a kid?

I have a vague memory of seeing news footage about the huge earthquake that hit parts of California in 1989. I mainly just remember seeing a lot of destroyed roads.

I also remember seeing some night vision footage from the Gulf War on TV. Just a green screen with occasional flashes and bright things flying around.

I remember the earthquake vaguely too, mainly seeing footage of a large collapsed bridge. To this day I get really nervous if I ever have to stop under a bridge.
