I'd just get rid of that thing altogether. The test is ridiculous, and many if not most Americans would not be able to pass it. The test needs to go.

I see that as being a flaw with our education system rather than the test, tbh. Civics/US government needs to be a required course for all students. I was horrified when I graduated from private school and found out that it WASN'T mandatory, because my school required all students to take a year-long class dedicated to civics and the US government so that we had a firm understanding of exactly how the government works, why the different parts are needed/what they do, etc. Everyone should know those things to be a responsible and informed citizen.

Okay, sure, it would be great if everyone knew this stuff. But as a requirement for citizenship? Ridiculous and discriminatory given that people born here don't have to take the test or lose their citizenship.

I'm not sure what I think the appropriate consequences should be for failing, but I think US citizens should have to take the test and pass it too. It's just basic knowledge about our government, and since we're a democracy, I think it's critical for everyone to understand their rights and responsibilities as well as the government's role and what it can and can't do. It would also make it a lot harder for politicians to pull one over on the people if the people knew that, say, Senator X doesn't actually have the power to do what he claims he's going to try to do.

That doesn't mean that it's necessarily a reasonable test, or a meaningful test, for immigrants or citizens.
