175. I have mixed feelings about this. I have a strange name, and it's not that I ever got mocked for it, it's that no one can pronounce it. I know it sounds vaguely racist to say it's a bad idea to give your child a Japanese name if you live in a country that speaks a different language, but trust me, your child will learn to hate every name that starts with "S" that isn't his.

It's not that the name is a girly name. Honestly, it doesn't sound all that feminine to me, personally. It's just that...Every substitute teacher that pauses when they reach his name on the role, every person that is hard of hearing and ask him to repeat himself again and again, everyone who shakes his hand and gives him that unsure smile when he introduces himself because they know they'll fuck it up when they say it - your kid will really start to resent these people.

Just...if you insist on doing this to him, give him a cool, normal middle name to go by. Because he will at least go through a phase where he will hate his name. When he's young, and goes on field trips and all the other kids are buying those pre-personalized badges or mugs, his name won't be there, and he will blame you. But if you give him a middle name he likes - that is heard of, and common, maybe he'll get over it.

Just...be careful. He could grow to love his name - I grew to love mine. But everyone's different. And if when he turns eighteen, he wants to change it, don't try to stop him - you won't be able to, and it'll only make him hate you.

I totally get where you're coming from, and you say it all in such a sweet and understanding way, but I'm not entirely sure I can agree with you. I grew up in Germany with an Irish name, which was 100% unpronounceable for everyone I came across there, even after telling them how to several times. Family friends I've known my whole life still say it wrong. Most people think I'm a boy when they read my name before they've met me. Just because they don't recognise it at all and don't know anyone else with a name like it, with foreign accents and all over the letters.

But it makes you different. Sometimes, yes, I hate it and I wish I had a German name or at least a generic name like Anna or something. Sometimes it was lame to be teased and your name made fun of. But it gets old quick. And having a quirky or unusual name is interesting too. A topic of conversation. An ice-breaker. You're going to be the only in someone's phonebook, you're going to be the one who gets Christmas cards and letters with your name spelt incorrectly (I get that in Ireland too - the world is weird). And to be honest, Sakura isn't half bad. It's easy to say by English standards, easy to spell. Nicknames are doable and most people probably won't even know it's a girl's name. I think a boy wouldn't have too much to complain about with that name - even if he did find out it was a girl's and he was annoyed with his parents. Plenty of names are applied to both genders. It's not the name, really, that's the problem - it's the reasons behind it and the selfishness!

Oh, I know what you mean. I really grew to love my name for all those reasons (well, except the misspellings, of course) but that was kind of my point. It's the little things that happen when you're growing up that get so annoying - and while we think Sakura is an easy name to pronounce, trust me, people will not get it. My name, by anyone with an IQ higher than their shoe size, should be quite easy to pronounce, but people still always get it wrong, and that will happen with Sakura all the time.

I understand what you mean about the selfishness, though. Many of the names I have picked out for if I have children are fandom-based, as well, I'll admit - but I don't think I'd be that adement on my stand if I worried that maybe my kid would be made fun of. I'd take that into account before throwing that albatross on my kid to bare. That's starting off parenting with a completely skewered point of view.

I wonder, if the OP loves the name so much and wishes to use it, why doesn't she just change hers? That way, she can find a name for her son that won't be such a problem.

I have a Japanese first name and I love it like burning. But it is very similar to a common American name that I totally hate because it's NOT MY NAME and I hate to be called that.

In that respect, "Sakura" would be superior to my name.

(But I like my name better than "Sakura".)

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
Boy, do I know how that feels. Think of any name starting with a "kay" sound and ending in a "ee" sound. I've been called it at least three times. Thus, any name with those similarities, I end up kind of hating. :x

I wasn't saying that there was no chance of him ever liking the name Sakura. My name is weird and I adore it. I'm just saying, chances are, there will at least be a year or two in his life where he'll wish he could go by something else. Thus, a normal middle name should help.

OT, but..

people here are being such teases! All these hints about unusual names and no one is spilling the beans!

I'm so curious: what's your name?

Sorry for being such a creeper. :)

What the heck. It's already appeared on FW at least once, and I'm mostly OK with people knowing it as long as it's just the FIRST and not the whole name.

Kiri.

Not: Carrie, Keri, Kerry, Kerri, Cary, Cara, or Kitty. :)

Try this on: Anne. With an 'E.' There was a period where I used 'Anita' for RP stuff, but now I seriously want to change my name to Anita because at least you can't MISSPELL IT EVERY SINGLE TIME >=( no love.

And to think, my parents could have named me Rebecca (they actually thought of that), which is cute, and I like, and you're able to play the Name Game without getting called FANNY. "Annie bo Bannie, fee fi fo Fanny." haaaaaate. (yes, I know Fanny is a name, but it still sounds like a euphemism for ASS.)

btw, I'm 20, so it's not a 1 or 2 year phase. I've hated "Anne" and "Annie" for almost 8 years.
