"There are too many straight white male heroes. Women and POC and LGBTQ people need characters they can relate to!"

One, there are other reasons why diversity is important besides this.

Two, it's possible to relate to characters who don't look like you - and women, POC, and LGBTQ people have long histories of being able to do exactly that - but there's also value in have characters who do look like you. And that's generally much harder to find for people outside of the socially normative categories.

Never said that was the only reason. I was talking about it as ONE argument some people use in it's favor and why it's flawed. They can use better ones.

And you have a point with the second part but my point was that it's not delivered well.
