I actually kind of agree, I think in some ways Misfits was weaker (issues with queer characters, rape, women, etc.) but where Umbrella Academy doesn't compare is that Misfits wasn't afraid to make the characters really awful and still have you sympathise with them.
Umbrella Academy doesn't really seem to trust the audience yet (see, dialogue that spells e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g out or unnecessary flashbacks, so if they mention Patch or Dave or whoever, they have to literally show them onscreen as a reminder - we get it!) so has to keep reminding us that ~*they're not that bad*~, but it makes the characters less complex, not more.
