IMO comparing it to tabloids doesn't do it any favors.

Not the tabloids, but like, OK, US Weekly, that kind of thing. There are tiers.

1. Actual in-depth entertaining reporting
2. Pretty factual, but party-line reporting, with a lot of promotional stuff and fluff
3. Specific promotional materials (here's about where I'd put RPF)
4. Entertainment gossip magazines
5. Tabloid reporting
