Um....how about those of us who watched those series BEFORE anyone knew what the fuck they were? Do we suddenly have to stop liking them because they are popular?

I like a lot of those series, and in many cases, particularly the Shounen Jump ones, I liked them before an anime was even concieved of. Or before anyone knew what the fuck they were. And hell, even the series I got into later I still have every right to like them. It has NOTHING to do with other people, it has to do with what *I* like. In all honesty, I'd have LIKED it if a lot of these series hadn't blown up, because it would mean the fandom wouldn't be as crazy. But what can you do? I won't disown is because other people like it.

I do like many series that are unheard of as well, or are not "major names", so I know this technically doesn't apply to me. But you know what? You can still suck my non-existant cock.

Shhhhh! You! You stop making sense right this instant! Just because I happened to be reading InuYasha before it was even considered truly popular (and not an anime yet) in Japan, doesn't mean that I'm not a mindless drone!

I mean, surely I knew that the series was going to suddenly ignite like wildfire, get a batshit insane fandom, and basically be everywhere you turned. Because I'm psychic like that.

Honestly, most people like what they like simply because, to them, it's good. I like a whole bunch of popular series (And got my friends into some of them), and quite a few lesser known, as well. Popularity has never been a high priority on my list, and I'm sure most fans are like that, too.

Death Note and Bleach, I read well before they were anime, and before the manga had hit American shores completely. Evangelion was still coming out on two episodes a VHS when I got into it. (I finished it via fansubs, which, LOL, ironically that is what the OP is telling me to watch.)

It sounds to me like the OP wants to tell people to not be sheep, and watch their own thing. Which is fine. But as you have said as well...I think 99% of people who are in fandom like it because they like it, not because it's popular. I mean, why would anyone take the time to do ANYTHING fandomish (write fanfic, draw fanart, bitch about their OTP) if they were ONLY into it because everyone else likes it? That's an AWFUL lot of effort to go though.

As I said earlier, the OP can suck it. Good, long, and hard.

(Just jumping in here to say this, sorry, but!) The funny thing is, the OP is telling people not to be sheep and watch their own thing, but they're somehow doing so by saying that they HAVE to like non-mainstream, little-known-series to be good fans. Which is... kind of telling them to still be a sheep, only in a different way! Not much of a difference between liking a series just because it's popular, and digging up rare little-known stuff just because it's "the thing to do." ;;

Like something because YOU LIKE IT. Not because it's popular, rare, or anything in between.

Might I add that many little known things eventually become big known things...so it's all relative anyway.

I know, right! And I know I got into many lesser-known animes on recommendations from friends, so that could be said to be because they're "popular" anyway (hello there, Keroro Gunso, Amatsuki, etc)... whereas a few of my more mainstream loves I discovered pretty much on my own by stumbling across descriptions or even single-character-images online (Reborn being a huge example XD). I don't really like being told that I HAVE to like rare and unknown stuff to be a "good" fan, even if I already do.

Hell, what about us who don't go grudging through the anime/manga fandoms and don't know what is popular and what is not?

I found both Death Note and Naruto by accident while looking for scans of YuYu Hakusho a few years back. I was not a big LJ user and I had stopped watching Cartoon Network anime ages ago before DBZ officially ended. Naruto and Death Note were completely random picks since I was looking at some manga list and I just randomly started reading the two. I loathed Death Note immediately, but fell in love with Naruto.

After I found out Naruto was insanely popular, I just shrugged it off as a way to better get manga scans without having to search six billion hours everyday. After I caught up with Naruto, I tried to read DN again. I finally liked it when I finished all 12 volumes. Hell, I didn't even know DN was popular until I joined both capslock_dn and F!A a few months ago. Hell, I still extremely surprised whenever I see a DN secret.

Some people need to realize that not everyone who likes certain fandoms found them the same way and the same time. -_-;
