123. So, here's me, just beginning to get into anime, having been shown some Miyazaki and Ouran High and deciding yes, I like the form and want to see more. And I'm intending to try the big popular ones because those are the ones that a) are popular and therefore must have something to reccomend them and b) are easiest to find. But I'm a little bit scared about even doing that, because (I guess like most big fandoms), the loudest people in anime fandom are the obnoxious elitists who won't give you the time of day if you don't know everything there is to know about everything right off the bat.

... well, at least it's good to know I'm not totally paranoid, huh?

The good thing about these people is that you can easily spot them as idiots, and therefore know that you can dismiss pretty much everything they say!

(I humbly recommend Princess Tutu, Full metal Alchemist, and One Piece if you want to try a few different genres. One Piece is incredibly long, though, as series in that genre (shonen) tend to be, but if you can bear with it for a while it's totally worth it.)

Seriously, don't let idiots like the maker of secret 123 scare you away. Anyone who thinks the shows you like is an indicator of intelligence, personality, or anything else is probably just incredibly immature-- and I say this as someone who mostly watches old, obscure anime.
It's a little kid thing, thinking you can judge someone by their tastes in popular culture. Most people grow out of it eventually. Like what you like; no one worth worrying about will judge you for it.

People can be such judgmental morons. If at all possible, just try to ignore people like that.

I'm going to jump aboard and do what a few others are doing, and give you some recommendations, if that's okay! I think you could give a try to Honey and Clover or Baccano! if you've time. They are good series, and both are very different from each other so if you don't like one, you may like the other. (Gorgeous animation to boot, so at least you'll be getting some thing out of watching them if all goes south.) ^^

I still want to see Honey and Clover, but I was having trouble finding torrents since the anime's been licensed (yet I don't see it for sale anywhere yet... and I'm getting impatient...)

In my experience it's not so much elitism as irritation that I'M ONE OF THE ONLY PEOPLE who appreciates a certain series. I would be overjoyed if more people would watch older anime, but the fact is that most of the time they don't want to out of some misguided notion that because it's old the art or animation is of lesser quality, when many times the opposite is actually true. (Anime studios actually had bigger budgets in the late 80s.)
