123. I get your point, but most people who like those things don't like them because they're popular. Bleach is definitely my favorite anime right now, but I still adore Record of Lodoss War, which no one really cares about too much, or ever has really. If you eschew people in your life for liking the mainstream, than you're no better than they are. My biggest issue with the fandom of popular shows is not that the shows are themselves overated, but the more popular the fandom, the greater the chance of people Narutarding things up. And you don't really know if someone will like a more obscure anime until you specifically try to introduce it said people in your life. I watched Midori Days (pretty damn obscure) in a viewing room for awhile at a con once, and I thought it was okay, but it was pretty damn repetitive. I can understand why something like Naruto would be more popular than Midori Days, because the show has a wider range of characters that appeal to people more.

155. I wish Yaoi fangirls would just STOP. Period.

You just TOTALLY said it. I remember when Lodoss was one of the only anime on TV, I loved that series, but you're right. It's faded into obscurity. And Midori no Hibi was shown at my Anime Club...I wasn't a huge fan either. Obscure does not mean good. Or bad. Just like popular doesn't mean good or bad!

*high five*

::High fives.:: :O

I like what I like, and that's just it. I don't care if it's popular, or very unknown or what. I try all kinds of different anime too, so immediately branding people who don't love all the obscure shows as stupid is a pretty lame thing to do!

Record of Lodoss War, which no one really cares about too much, or ever has really

90s anime fandom in the United States was pretty much all over Record of Lodoss War. (Nobuteru Yuki FTW.) I used to have the dub VHS boxset back in high school. It's one of those shows like Bubblegum Crisis that actually used to be super popular but now nobody knows what it is.

But I get what you are saying. I don't know how I gravitated towards older anime exactly (I think it started with me randomly discovering Lupin III back when I used to send off for vhs fansubs in the mail) but if it wasn't for me meeting my husband at AX '03 I wouldn't know about a lot of the series that I enjoy tight now. Actually, I probably wouldn't even be watching mecha anime, period.

Basically for me it's frustrating to not find much of a fandom for some of the series you like, while meanwhile other popular shows (that let's face it, aren't always that great, just popular) enjoy a huge fanbase. Although there are problems with being in a huge fandom that I don't have to deal with as a result, so maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Anyway, because not that many people enjoy some of these "obscure" or older series sometimes I feel special like I'm in on some kind of secret or something. It's not that I want to seem elitist.
