Well, employers are obviously going to do whatever suits their bottom line. But I don't think outraged twitter mobs make the best judge and jury.

"people on Twitter should not decide who gets fired" is a totally different idea than "people shouldn't get fired for Tweets"! I agree that you shouldn't just be fired for having a tweet that's, like, controversial. But I think there are tweets that really are bad that one could deserve to get fired for, depending on the context.

And then, like you say, ultimately companies are going to do what they want to.

Who is deciding what's "controversial" and what's a terminable tweet?

There's no objective standard for any of those things. Nor could there be. You have to use the best judgment you can.

But that's not unique to Twitter, that's the way that almost anything works.
