Here, have a TL;DR.

A game taking place earlier in the timeline showed Axel (red-head) as around 12-16, so he's between 22-26 in the pic (Roxas is around 15). Some fans jumped ship because they didn't like the age difference, others didn't care. This was several years ago and I wasn't in the fandom at the time so I've no idea how the discourse went.

Don't get me wrong, I get being squicked. I was. But most people arguing "Axel/Roxas shippers are nasty/suspect/skeevy because of the age difference" JUST SO HAPPEN to be my fellow Axel/Saïx shippers. For some strange reason they never bring up any other potential issue... except for "Axel is like a parent to Roxas!" (lol no). No other potential issues are ever brought up. Why do I mention this? Because said shippers JUST SO HAPPEN to be going hardcore for Sea Salt Family - that is, Axel and Saïx adopt Roxas + another teen and raise them as their kids, which is cute but a hilariously bad idea considering the issues of everyone involved.

Then again I'm probably ~horrible~ because I don't conflate shipping with morality or activism, nor do I go around harassing other shippers.

Wait... THAT'S what Sea Salt Family refers to? I've been out of the loop with this fandom for too long, that wasn't even a thing when 358/2 Days first dropped.

You're right, though, that is a hilariously bad idea. Saïx's WHOLE THING in that game is that he's just so unimpressed with the kids, to put it lightly, and then becomes so unimpressed with Axel as a result of him caring for the kids, that he turns to murderous intentions. So nurturing! Even that aside, why have twenty-somethings adopt teenagers as kids? Why not just go with the dynamics they portrayed in canon where Axel is sort of an older brother to them?

Sometimes I feel like the only family dynamics fandom people care about is the traditional nuclear family, to the point where they have to de-age characters and change everything about their personality to make it happen.
