I hate his hats.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I laughed out loud over this comment. Thank you.

Yeah the added Sansa rape is a definite improvement

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You are right, that was not an improvement. Also, changing Robb's story was not an improvement. The book version was like his father: honor before reason. the show version was just a sappy guy in love making a stupid decision.

Aging up the characters was, though. Massive improvement. And removing some of the ridiculous meandering side plots was good. The books are far too long.

The show also ruined Theon, Loras, Stannis, and Jaime's stories/character as well. And I don't like Ramsay, but holy shit, the show missed the point of his character. Turning the batshit ugly serial rapist into an attractive overpowered villain Sue with a girlfriend is just why. That's not even getting into the gratuitous rape, nudity, and male gaze permeating the show that takes up time that can be spent on, y'know, character development. The scene with Craster's rape hut still disgusts me to this day.

Really, the only character who was "improved" upon is Dany, because her story in the later novels is unbearably dull. Jon and Arya's show counterparts are alright, I guess. Tyrion is far less grey in the show, but that also makes him less interesting to me. Cersei was made less evil and crazy in the show, for some reason, which I also feel makes her less interesting.

This. And add Littlefinger to the list

That scene in Craster's Keep where women being raped are used as literal scenery really turned my stomach. I know the books are pretty bad for rape but the show has taken it to another level. I still don't feel up to watching that episode again. Same with the wtf decision to basically merge show Sansa's story with fake!Arya from the books.

I'm not usually all that squeamish, but hearing the cries of women in pain as they're being raped in the background, cutting away to show a man forcefully moving a woman so we get a gratuitous shot of her breasts as he's raping her, followed by Burn Gorman's character talking with a naked girl on his lap who has a traumatized thousand yard stare, just. The whole fucking scene was repulsive and finding out that they hired porn stars just so they could film it in a way that's meant to be erotic? And the comments I saw from dudes who ogled the women during that scene on various sites? Just. I fucking hate the show and I will gladly take the book over that visual nightmare.

See, it's stuff like this that makes me scratch my head when people talk as if the books are soooo much worse than the show. I'm not saying the books are innocent of this kind of thing, but it doesn't even begin to touch the show.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, in some parts. I'm not a fan of how the characterization took a hit with the changes in story.

I'm just glad we're going to see any kind of ending at all.

I read all the books around the time the series first aired and remember thinking there was a chance the show would get ahead of the books. I was still naively hopeful that at the very least the sixth book would be out before the show got toward ADWD.

By this point I don't think I care to finish the book series and will probably just accept whatever the show does. 8 years feels like a LONG time to wait for a sequel book. I don't even know how people who have been here for longer have managed with all the waiting between publishing dates!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the publishing dates weren't too bad for the first four books. Then by the time the fifth book came out, the show was already airing, so that helped a bit, I think.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah you're probably right, OP. It gutted me tbh. I enjoyed the books so much. I've decided to not give a shit anymore for the sake of my sanity.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2019-03-23 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The books really aren't that great and they've only gone way the fuck downhill as the series has progressed... but he could still finish the series.

I don't doubt he has massive health problems, but idk. It's not impossible.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
0/10. This could have worked years ago when the show was decent but not anymore.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
There are thinks I like better in the books and other thinks that I like better in the show. I'm just really really grateful that the show will give me an ending. Sure, it's not going to be the 100% book ending, but it's at least something.

There are these two extremes in fandom where some people think he shouldn't do anything apart from writing the last books and some people who tell you you're a bad fan when you say you're tired of waiting and I don't agree with either.

Yes, Gaiman was right in saying GRRM isn't our bitch, but I also think it's untrue that he doesn't owe anyone anything. At the very least he owes his publisher imo.

And possibly unpopular opinion, but I hope he sticks to his ending no matter what the show spoils. I know some people are gleeful at the prospect of him changing everything just to spite D&D, but I just think it would be childish.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF. Ofc I meant "things" and not "thinks". Haven't made that mistake in a long long time, guess it was overdue.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is that really what some people think? Hmmm... Here's me thinking that what he was building up all along was not R+L=J and that the books will go a different route.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The show isn't better though. Like, at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, the show and the books are both good and bad in different ways. He needs a ghost writer and an editor; the show needs to get its hand out of its pants.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
There is footage somewhere of him and Stephen King talking about writing. King writes about 362 days a year or something and does not believe in writer's block. The look on GRRM's face was priceless.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
tbf Stephen King is 'writers georg who lives in cave & writes over 10,000 words each day, is an outlier'

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
It was still funny.

Not related to the secret (I haven't read the books or seen the show), but he creeps me out. Even without him saying a word, I get "creepy old pervert" vibes. I do every single time I see a picture of him.

And is he any good? I get that he's famous, but how good is his writing really?
