Shipping vs representation

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the Riverdale secret a few nights ago: I can't get into Culber/Stamets. The actors have no chemistry and their relationship is so boring. Still, I salute there being a canon gay male couple in Star Trek. I just wish it was a more interesting one.

I'm happy Grey's Anatomy has a gay couple now. But I have no interest in the show anymore. Callie/Arizona broke a lot of ground and was awesome. And I think the show can break more ground with the current couple. But I don't care anymore. Don't even know the character names.

Realistically, I'm just not interested in most canon couples regardless of gender.

Same.

Same. If I want romance, I'll read romance. Otherwise, it just gets in the way of what I'm actually interested in.

I like romance, I just find that canon relationships usually don't appeal to me, because of the characters and tropes involved I guess

I like romance too, I didn't mean for my post to imply otherwise. It's easier to narrow down what I want when it's explicitly about it instead of the side.

Forever mad that Gotham didn't have the balls to go full force with that ship.

It was so adorable and they just pussied the fuck out.

Which ship?

Penguin/Riddler. At least, where I left off it had essentially been sunk, but that was a while ago.

I may have ragequit the show a little after that.

NAYRT but aw now I am sad. I just started watching Gotham now that it's on its last season (I am better with finished stuff than ongoing stuff) so they haven't even met yet, but I heard they were being made canon and now I am sad...

Absofukinlutely. I mean the show's a complete mess either way, but they totally shit the bed with their relationship. Not to mention the deal with Kristen's twin Isabelle, ugh.
It's so bad I just can't look away.

Pretty much any canon couple I find boring. I think I prefer couples where there's unfulfilled tension. More room to play in fic. :)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I hate it when they don't even bother to get the audience invested in the possibility of the characters getting together. I'd prefer they didn't get together at all than they did and it was so boring I immediately lost interest.

It would have helped if he wasn't dead for most of the series.

It's easy for me to ship canon because I just like romance in general man so I can get drawn into canon LGBT ships quite easy, I mean I like Choni but I recognize that the show is utterly terrible. I mean fuck I was all over Brittana when Glee was big and that show was a dumpster fire, especially looking back at it.

I even liked Staments/Culber initially but I didn't care for how they killed one-half off unceremoniously(it literally could have been anyone, that's how little it mattered), I haven't started s2 so I'll see what happens there with them and figure out if I'm into them again(I know some spoilers, but not the finer details).

But generally even if I don't jive with a canon LGBT ship I'll still support it's existence because seeing a wider array of romances is a good thing, for those of us that are LGBT and for those that aren't.

If you don't mind another tiny spoiler for S2... it turns out that no, it couldn't actually have been anyone. There was a very good reason why it was Culber, and (other spoilers) couldn't have happened if it was anyone else.

That's a good thing to know because in s1 it did not come off like his death mattered at all, I don't care if this is them retconning stuff or if it was always the plan(though if it was... okay), but I'm glad to know it isn't inconsequential in s2.

Thank you nonnie. :)

I'm surprised nobody's said Korrasami yet, so I'll say it. I loved it when it happened too, but now I realize it was badly written and the representation wasn't that great even for the time. I hate how it's hailed by people who say Word of God isn't good enough for confirming a character's sexuality, but then forget that there was a Word of God announcement on Korrasami. It was NOT explicit enough in the show. It's just that the announcement came so quickly after it aired that people forget it happened.

I also used to love Haruka/Michiru because they were Baby's First Canon Lesbian Ship, but now I think it's boring and I don't like either of them as characters.

Re: Shipping vs representation

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Korrasami isn't explicit in the sense that there's an on-screen kiss or verbal confirmation of their relationship. And with everything else going on, it also isn't even a central focus that a casual viewer would latch onto. I think there's canon implication in the show - with a few instances of flirting and there's absolutely romantic insinuation in the ending. So I don't think it's on par with, say, Dumbledore is gay a la Word of God. It's more than that, and the representation is great considering the genre and all. But I'd be less excited about it if it came out today.

Re: Shipping vs representation

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think Korrasami is on par with Dumbledore but that's because I remember reading the book before JK made the announcement and wondering if certain passages about Dumbledore and Grindlewald were meant to be subtext or not, and after I finished I saw the fandom having debates about that very issue. Korrasami had the same thing happen in that brief span before Bryke announced it was canon. Some people said it was canon, but lots of others said they were just blinded by their shipping goggles and it was too vague to tell. Even some of the people saying it was canon were like "Yeah, that's true, but let me believe."

Re: Shipping vs representation

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't Korrasami get a comic book where they date and kiss? So it's better than Dumbedore and Grindlewald's relationship which is sexual but won't be depicted because Rowling is interested in emotions like how she finds emotions in all human relationships interesting.

I like my ships, particularly my OTPs, but I don't think the m/m or f/f ones should be canon ~for representation~. That kind of thinking leads to madness and shipwars disguized as push for representation.

+100, especially since nowadays it inevitably turns into Purity wank as well.
