Alarm fatigue in fandom

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone else suffering from this?

What is 'alarm' fatigue?

Damn, seems I mixed up this with outrage fatigue. I blame being ESL!

Basically when people claim something or someone is problematic because of XYZ, except either XYZ isn't true or it's more complicated than that.

What do you mean by alarm fatigue? Do you mean outrage fatigue? If so, then yes, I was tired of it as early as 2014 and now find it damn near unbearable.

OP

Yeah, that's what I meant! I thought it was annoying before, but now it's almost impossible to avoid in certain fandoms.

OP here. I hate that my first reaction nowadays on seeing "this person approves of adult/teen couples in real life!" or "this person is a pedo!" isn't horror but doubt. But there's been so many times I've found that neither is true of the accused, they just happen to have a ship the accuser is squicked by, or dislikes, or gets in the way of their own OTP.

And no, "I'm a survivor" doesn't make me more likely to believe them. Especially since I know many of the shippers of problematic ships are also survivors.

Favourite/worst example I've seen of this was a great deal of "(blogger) is totes a pedo!!!" stirred up by someone who *drumroll* had entirely literally, without a word of exaggeration, been caught grooming a 14-year-old.
And no-one learned anything. Of course.

Now that's legit horrifying.

Holy shit that's fucking terrifying!

Re: Alarm fatigue in fandom

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This is unsurprising. Have you ever noticed how these people are really, really obsessed with finding pedophilia everywhere?

Re: Alarm fatigue in fandom

(Anonymous) 2019-03-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sick of it too.

Along with the constant paranoia about voicing my opinions over the whole "anti" thing because I worry that someone I know has anti views or drinks their kool aid and will declare me a pedophile.

Hell, I'm wary of voicing my opinions in general since I'm 31. To some people that apparently makes me a pedo by default - never mind that some fandoms existed before they were born!

AYRT

I'm almost 30. If I weren't so afraid it would make me laugh bc I honestly dont like interacting with minors in fan spaces.
But some of these crusaders are downright willing to do all sorts of threatening, cruel shit to people.

Whenever people shake and cry about how problematic a fandom or ship is it makes me want to join the fandom/ship the ship. 9.9 times out of 10 they are just getting their performative outrage high from doing this.
