I'm actually really excited to see what the new Jafar will bring to the table. I love his overall look (the outfit is gorgeous) and Marwan Kenzari has a certain kind of presence that might add an extra level of intrigue to the role, from what I've seen of his earlier work.

His voice in the trailer really bugged me. More than his looks, he SOUNDS way too young for my tastes.

He doesn't sound menacing in the trailer, but also, it's isolated lines. I'm hoping it will be better with context.

I just think he's hot. We'll have to see what he's like in the movies. But right now I'm just happy for some nice eye candy.

I swear I just had this same conversation with someone at work... I feel like they're going with the angle of "but he's so handsome! he can't be evil!" a la Ted Bundy. In a cartoon you can be like "well DUH he's evil LOOK AT HIM" "well DUH Sailor Moon is THE MOON PRINCESS" but the live action stuff should lean a little more on the realism side of fantasy.

Alternately, people are gonna wanna fuck Jafar anyway, might as well make him handsome

"Alternately, people are gonna wanna fuck Jafar anyway, might as well make him handsome"

LOL, exactly.

He's more like Aladdin cosplaying Jafar.

Thanks for making a secret out of my comment!

And yeah, after rewatching the trailer, I still think this. The voice... well. Yes, it's isolated lines and oftentimes trailers are dubbed over qithout much attention to detail and things sound very different in the finished movie. But I find his voice unpleasantly high and nasal in regards to the role.

He kind of looks like someone's dad doing a vaguely Arabian Nights-inspired cosplay.

I actually don't like the casting for this movie overall, but I totally agree with you on Jafar. He was completely underwhelming. He's like the opposite of overwhelming presence the character is supposed to exude.

I'll take this over Stereotypically Arabian Guy when everyone else looked like they were modeled after white people.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
What?
If anything, the movie trailer and actors look like they tried very hard to model everything after a Bollywood movie, not white people.

IKR? I know that they can't literally bring the animated Jafar to life, but I feel like they should have gotten someone older with more striking features. High cheekbones, long face shape, etc. The actor they went with is too... idk, generically pretty? Add in that Jafar gets explicitly called out in the original move (by a dude with white hair, nonetheless) as being far too old for Jasmine, and this guy doesn't seem to fit.

This was my brother's reaction. He always loves villains best, so whereas I was just sort of, "oh okay whatever, he'll probably be fine," my brother was like "HE'S AWFUL HOW BORING" and then we showed the trailer to our roommate, who says "Where was Jafar? Was he even in that?" and brother goes "I REST MY CASE! HE'S THAT UNIMPRESSIVE!!"

I think I'm realising I'm tired of the remake train, so I can't even be bothered to work up energy to care either way.

It's kind of a bummer in this specific case, because I think it would be really interesting if they actually tried to do something creative and novel with it, instead of just the usual Disney approach of spectacle with all the sharp edges rounded off
