So do you honor their request that you refer to them using made-up words? Because I won't, and if that's being mean, so be it.

I'm more than happy to use they/them, though.

I've never been put in that position yet, but I'd try to avoid it if at all possible. I'm fine with using they/them, though.

You know, people used to say the same thing about referring to my wife as my wife because "a wife has a husband." Then there's the extremes where people I've cut out of my life have referred to my wife as my friend.

"I'm fine with using partner, but wife is too far."

Wife is a standard English word. So I don't see the relevance here.

People used to say that "wife" a word you made up because you didn't like the word "partner"? I don't think your analogy is a very good one. Language changes and evolves over time. People can look at new made up words and vote no thanks.

I very much doubt people were accusing you of having made up the word "wife". That doesn't make any sense. I suspect your analogy is not as sound as you thought it was when you wrote this comment.

*extremely all words are made up voice*

all words are made up

Yep. And the ones people think are too ridiculous to use don't last.

So then the criterion that's relevant is "ridiculous" not "made up"
