I think people weren't thinking about the distinction between 'cool or rebellious' and 'hot or attractive', or like physical attractiveness vs social markers

Like 'why would people be hideous on purpose' is a reasonable question! It's just there is also a reasonable answer: 'in some circles that's the coolest thing to do' :P
