Everybody at the time thought the EU was canon. At least in practice. That was a really widespread assumption, and a pretty reasonable one. Everybody knew that George had the ability to overwrite anything in the EU, but that was the only limitation - the attitude was very much "this is all canon unless George specifically contradicts it". And then, obviously, it ultimately did get overwritten.

I don't really care for the EU and I also don't really care about what is and isn't canon anymore. But people who thought the EU was canon were not really being unreasonable at the time.

I'm starting to read EU books. TFA got me more into Star Wars. I was turned off the sequel trilogy after TLJ but I'm enjoying the books. But I haven't really gone into post ROTJ stuff except the Thrawn Trilogy. I like the worldbuilding better in the new movies.

Starting reading it now, I'm happy the story group is now trying to keep one canon since the EU authors I've read clearly had their own biases about certain characters. Still, there are a lot of fun things in the EU. Certainly lots of cherry-picking that they could do to bring some characters or storylines into canon.

I think that's a strength of the MCU. They have decades of stories to see what worked and what didn't. It's nice to be able to take the good stuff and leave the bad. Or fix things like Chewie's death.

My god, I wish they'd commit to making the NEW SW more separated from the old EU, and keeping it that way. Stop bringing in stuff like Thrawn when you could be telling your OWN stories, Disney!

I mean. I agree. But I also loved Thrawn. Alliances was a bit meh, but... I have hope for the third book?

At least they aren't adding Darth Bane. All the fanboys who are insisting that Bane is or will be canon seem to be the same fanboys offended by the existence of the new movies/canon, so I really don't want them to get what they want in any way.

Extended Universe, i.e. the licensed tie-ins pre "The Force Awakens."
