I'm rewatching FMA and they're almost tolerable compared to Winry. Worst character ever. And I don't usually hate female characters, not even for shipping related reasons - I mean, I love Hawkeye and Lust.

IA completely. I actually feel that Orihime and Sakura got slightly better development, which is sad to say. Winry just remained a static character and never grew at all.

I'm only familiar with the manga, but the feeling I got was that Winry, despite the early introduction, was truly a supporting character, and the author never meant for her to have much impact on the story after a certain point beyond representing the idea of home for the leads. The manga went on to introduce more female characters who had more impact on the plot and arguably more development than Winry.

Sakura was indisputably one of the leads in Naruto, though, so the missteps in her arc felt more egregious to me.
