Repeated illnesses

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm being investigated as to why I keep getting sick. There’s a wait for an appointment though. In the meantime anyone got any immune boosting suggestions? (I'm fully vaccinated obvs.)

Is it allergies or is it viral?

If you don't already do so, regularly clean everything you (and other people) touch/use/put their hands on at home and at your work area with sprays or disinfectant hand wipes. Pay attention everything you and others touch on a regular basis. Phones, screens, computer keys/mouse, remotes, handles and door knobs. When you can't disinfect them, avoid putting your hands near your face, nose, eyes or mouth.

As a little kid I was sick every year from being in a poorly ventilated school and there wasn't much being done to clean/disinfect anything that I and other kids regularly used. Once I got out of there, the yearly illnesses went away and I'm rarely ever sick even though I work with lots of people almost every day.

How's your diet? Are you getting enough sleep? Washing your hands often? There's not really any magical answer for boosting one's immune system. I'd start taking a look at your overall health, followed by sanitation practices.

As others have mentioned, it might have something to do with allergies. You might want to check for mold and if all of your filters are being replaced regularly.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased risk or severity of viral infections, but the studies on supplements effects on the immune system are inconsistent. So, if you're looking to boost your intake, maybe go with sun exposure (but not too much because skin cancer) or food sources like mushrooms, fatty fish (like tuna or salmon), and cooked egg yolk.

yeah don't listen to the marketing bullshit that is "immune system boosting" because that's not a real thing. Your immune system works regardless of your body's overall health unless you have a disease that specifically weakens it, and you can't boost it. Otherwise everyone who "boosted" would have autoimmune diseases caused by an over-eager immune system attacking everything.

good that your doctor is investigating frequent illness, though. You would definitely want to know if you had something compromising your system.

Let me get this out of the way first - I don't think there's anything you can just take that's proven to boost your immune system, per se. You can make sure that your body is functioning at an optimal level by basically living as healthy of a lifestyle as you can stand. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date, and make sure to get a flu shot every year if you're able. During cold/flu season especially, avoid touching stuff in public places like hand rails, door knobs, etc. when you can, and wash your hands or keep hand sanitizer on you and do that periodically.

It also depends on what kind of sickness we're talking about. Are you getting a lot of colds, or is it something else? As part of your check up, maybe get some general blood testing done to see if your vitamin levels are off or something subtle like that.
