I typed and re-typed my comment several times because I kept expanding on what exactly I meant by failure for both Vimes and Zuko, and finally settled on just something short. XD

So yeah, I completely agree. Vimes is also very good at reading and working crowds, which I guess could be considered a kind of diplomacy as well? idk, maybe I'm reaching. I think any "diplomat problems" in the end come back to his inability and disinterest in working with the upper class: he can handle the average asshole citizen but quickly loses patience with asshole nobles.
