Fandom gratitude

[personal profile] kribban 2019-04-02 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I am currently doing kink meme archeology. Whenever I see a fic from a LJ that is deleted but not purged I feel deep gratitude towards that person.<3

Same for going through my ao3 bookmarks and I keep stumbling upon "this work has been deleted" and will forever wonder what wonderful story was purged that I can never re-read. Bless you all you orphaning folks.

Oh, this is always such a bummer!

It's like... I really don't bookmark that many fics, so whatever this was, it must have been something I really loved, you know?

TWO of my favorite Hannibal fics got deleted (by two different authors) and I only found out when I went for a comfort reread and couldn't find them anywhere and I'm so bummed. I went and read my favorite Thor fic in consolation but it just wasn't the same jam I wanted. I know it's an author's work to do with as they please but it just makes me sad when something I love is just... gone. :<

This is why I started regularly downloading longer fics.

Everytime I stumble upon a deleted bookmarked fic I tell myself to start downloading the fic if I liked it. Do I ever put that into action? No. No I have not. :/

It took me a LONG time. I have over 1,000 fics downloaded now.

How do you organize them? A couple of computers ago I had such a well organized fic folder. I love setting up that stuff.

Oh man, I'm totally in the same boat.

My problem, mainly, is that my first, like, eight years spent in fandom were pretty much entirely spent in the X-Files fandom, and let me tell you, you can find ANYTHING in that fandom. The entire time I was in that fandom, I don't think there was ever a single fic I just straight up couldn't find, whether through Wayback, or someone's old-ass recs page, or even some seniority-having fan of yore having a copy kicking around on their hard drive since the literal 90s. So I developed the WORST fanfic-saving habits - namely, none at all. And now they're so ingrained that I'm not sure I'll ever smarten up and learn to save shit I like.
