They're really shitty, though, even by the standards of the genre.

I don't think Twilight is worse than most YA, but Fifty Shades is really REALLY bad.

Yeah, exactly! There are definitely times when society unfairly judges things that are harmless fantasies for women, and then also, 50 Shades of Grey is incredibly bad in a bunch of different levels.

Seconding this. I actually think Twilight might even be a little above average for YA? (There is some phenomenal YA fiction out there, but boy oh boy is there ever a lot of bad YA fiction out there too).

I have no such defense for FSoG, nor do I wish I had one.

I think the worldbuilding for Twilight was really interesting. It was just unfortunate that we were stuck with Bella's very limited perspective most of the time.

Agreed. I enjoy the Twilight universe, myself, and would have loved a completely different story set inside of it.

I considered started a drinking game every time Ana said "crap", but I realized I would get really, really drunk if I did...

Apart from the themes it's so badly written my brain got sore.

This. I don't hate them because they're sexual fantasies for women, I hate them because they're bad. There's so much better stuff out there to be into.
