Are we limiting sci-fi to TV and movies here?

Agreed. As an atheist I found it particularly lovely to see mutual respect between the religion of Shepherd and the ....space atheism as it were of Mal

I agree. I wish they'd gone more into Inara's Budhism. But I liked that both Book and Mal were portrayed as good people just with different beliefs.

I'm a hardcore atheist and I just think Book is a cool guy.

Shout-out to Ron Glass who was great in everything that he did! One of my favorite actors! <3

What are some major, popular sci-fi things that are particularly disrespectful to religion, because nothing is coming to mind? I think B5 and Firefly stand out because they give some characters recognisable human religions that people currently practice (and not made up future religions or the Force), as opposed to Star Trek, which didn't portray the religious lives of its human characters at all. I don't see how that's an issue of respect, though.

Star Trek actively hated on religion. Well, Next Gen did anyway. There was an episode that portrayed religion as something only primitive people believe and something that we need to stop believing in.

Don't forget Battle Star Galactica.

I always thought it was cool that Battlestar portrayed not just religion respectfully but polytheistic religion.
