Re: Has anyone ever met someone from the internet? How did it go?

I just met an online friend for the first time this week. (I'm the anon who commented late Saturday night about doing so, and how it was great, but also a bummer because we had a third friend who planned to be there but recently died.) I'm 28, and I've had online friends since I was 11-ish. He was attending a convention near me, and I didn't go to the con, but I went out there to meet up. The transition to offline conversation was smooth. I expected an awkward-fest because I'm usually very awkward offline, but it wasn't at all. It just goes to reinforce what I already knew...that my online friendships are more real than most anything I've ever had offline.

I wouldn't know myself, but I don't consider meeting people from dating sites to be remotely the same thing; one is basically a blind date, and the other is basically meeting a pen pal. Usually you've already bonded a lot more with someone you've been writing to for months or years than you have with someone your friend thinks you might be into. But I don't date at all, so I wouldn't know as well as someone who does.

That sounds kind of both awesome and also a bit sad - I'm glad that it worked out well for you and the other friend as well though! I guess when knowing someone online first you've already maybe got to know how they think or what their opinions are, so it might be less awkward expressing stuff IRL or to non fandom people.

That makes sense for the online dating thing, where the end result seems to be 'let's move this into irl space', whereas with fandom irl is kind of a 'if it happens, sure, but it doesn't have to happen for us both to enjoy or chat with each other' kind of thing.
