Re: Has anyone ever met someone from the internet? How did it go?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-06 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I met several internet friends over the years and it was always a very enjoyable experience despite me being a huge introvert.

The first time was when I was 15 or 16. Combined a family vacation with meeting my then-beta at her home town.

The second time was meeting my BFF to watch a movie sequel from our fandom in the cinema. I was maybe 19 or 20. The movie was disappointing, but the conversation wasn't. We stayed friends for almost eight years until she sadly passed away. At her funeral, I met another internet friend for the first time who, despite the circumstances, also turned out to be lovely.

A few years later (I was 21), I met a group of other fans and we spent two wonderful days together.

Out of all these people I only stayed in contact with two.

It's probably just me, but I see fandom and online dating (even if it's just a search for platonic friends) as something different because fandom is a hobby of mine -- or maybe a lifestyle? Finding like-minded fandom people usually means I can communicate a lot more easily with them whereas all that other online stuff intimidates the hell out of me for some reason.
