Re: Pet Peeves

I'm a cashier. Not in the US. I feel like I need to clarify that, because friends told me that people in general have a lil chat with cashiers etc. We sometimes do to, but it's usually some form of "Hello", telling them the amount of money and asking if they collect points or something (plus a general "please" and "thanks" ofc).

Long story short, my pet peeve is people just not... talking to me. Like... not even a word. No hello. Nothing. Maybe some grunting when I ask if they want the receipt. It's just so disrespectful and it really makes me feel shitty and shows me what people think in general of people in retail jobs.
(Same with people on the phone, unless I can tell it's really important)

Probably for at least some of them, they just finished being paid to fake cheer and talk to strangers all day at work, and don't want to talk to more strangers when they get to be the customer... I wouldn't take it personally

But then they should know how it is. Like, I said: I don't talk to most of my customers. It goes something like this:

Me: Hello!
They: Hello.
Me: *scans in silence* That would be 25,56€ please. Do you have a Payback card?
They: Yes/No. *hands me the money*
Me: Thanks. Do you need the receipt?
They: Yes/No
Me: Have a nice day!
They: You, too.

Those are... like 5 words.

I have very occasionally done this i'm said to say. But only on the very worst days of my depression where it's hard even to put one foot in front of the other. I never mean to be rude though.

I agree completely. I remember the one time when this lady just could not be bothered, and when the cashier said 'have a nice day', she just glared and stormed off. Like I just looked at the cashier like 'somebody's having a bad day...'

Have you considered that some of them might just be painfully shy and/or on the spectrum? I've seen my husband react to cashiers that way, and it's so cringeworthy. But if you knew the extreme anxiety it was causing him, having to interact with a stranger, you'd understand it's not you at all.

I have social anxiety myself and I know it's hard. It also makes me feel helpless. Asking questions and not getting an answer. It's not a nice feeling at all. It can also be very embarassing when there is a line and people look at me with pity, asking the same question twice cause hey, maybe they didn't hear me.
Believe me, I do differentiate between people who are clearly having a bad day/are shy and people who just... can't be bothered. Or only pipe up when they think the price for an item is wrong.

I live in a very small town, so I have lots of regular customers, so I know most of these people.

Same. Some days are harder than others and I have a hard time making eye contact, but on the other hand it makes me mad. Like, I have to talk to 40 people today but you can’t even say hi back?!
And I know some people have worse anxiety. But I still have feelings about it, man.

that's when you seriously need to get some therapy, because saying a few words to a cashier should not be causing you that much anxiety, and i say this as a person with anxiety.

Some might be in pain, exhausted, or worried about something big.

But they can chat with their friends or greet someone all cheery right afterwards.
Obviously I don't judge people who look like they're having a really bad day, but the people who clearly just can't be bothered.

I don't want them to chat with me. Just an answer to the two simple questions I ask would be nice? Just a yes or no. Or the one question, really. Cause if you silently pull out your Payback card after I already entered the amount of money you gave me, the process is finished and you don't get the points. If you'd have bothered to just say yes, we could have avoided that. (My boss is really really adamant about us scanning those damn cards for ~the statistic)

So what? You can still say 'hi' back when someone says hi to you.

I kinda want to say "check your privilege!" to this, but I'll just say "you'll learn..." instead.

Amusingly enough, I have chronic health problems that leave me pretty much in a state of constant pain/exhaustion. I still manage not to be a dick to cashiers.

Hello, fellow non-US cashier!

This drives me up the wall too. Especially when it's someone who's made a big song and dance of not using the self-service machine because they'd "rather talk to a REAL PERSON not a MACHINE," then proceed to completely ignore me through the entire transaction.

I am in the US and work in a coffee shop with a drive-thru and that is a huge pet peeve of mine, especially cause usually in the drive-thru I’m trying to make sure we didn’t miscomminicate and someone not looking at me, not speaking, just waving their card at me as they look at their phone is not helping me do my job.

related - i work in customer services in retail and it's just as bad on my side of the store

1) the "not a word" people... say what you will about the company but if you want to moan or get something repaired then regardless of how entitled you feel at that moment, the person behind the counter is still providing you a service and some acknowledgement of that would be nice

2) the "on the phone" people... get off it. just get off it. otherwise i'm going to ignore you until you do because CLEARLY your phonecall is more important than whatever you came here for and i don't want to interrupt it

3) the "no i didn't bring my receipt but surely you can look me up on the system" people... yeah sure, i know there's four people queueing up behind you but i can spend the next fucking hour searching through all our sales records for the last year (twenty days at a time because that's how our system works) while you try and make up your mind which card you paid with and how long ago you bought it

Also people who get annoyed when you say hi. I work at a store where we’re supposed to greet every customer and some people find it annoying. Well, sorry pal. I can understand if I accidentally say it twice because I can’t remember if I passed you or not but we have undercover visits from corporate so i’m going to greet the fuck out of you.
