(Anonymous) 2019-04-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)Several corners actually.
He has all these building characters arcs and plot threads dangling. His "gardener" style of writing is commendable and I actually find it inspiring, but it's obvious his "garden" has turned into a labyrinthine forest (godswood?) that's easy to get lost in. I think GRRM has said in the past he relies on some close BNF's to keep it all together for him and compiled the wiki partially for his reference.
ADWD was a slog at times, but there were some really fun revelations in it and all the preview chapters for TWOW I've read have been phenomenal.
I like the show fine enough, at least in the beginning. Some later episodes I find near unwatchable because these are some of my favorite characters in fiction and they're just so... bastardized. It's like everyone got hit with blasts from a stupefying ray gun.
The actors are incredible, many perfectly cast. Dinklage obviously, but I'd say Headey is my favorite. She just IS Cersei for me.
At first I appreciated the costume and set design, I still do to an extent. But the world aesthetic I have in my head is much more sophisticated, a more strictly historically inspired one mixed with a high medieval flavor and fantastical costume elements, perhaps inspired by gothic architecture, royal regalia, and religious relics.
There's a lot of silly modern-inspired fashion that I just think ruins the immersion for me as medieval fantasy, though I do enjoy some of them on their own merits. Like as art pieces in and of themselves.
The real castle sets are practical and often cool, but for me lack the grandeur they are described in the books as having. That's a budget issue though.
Honestly, I think ASOIAF is better suited to an adult animated series. A visual style like Castlevania on Netflix or the Vision of Escaflowne movie. It would capture the epic scale in a cost effective way for me.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-08 09:52 am (UTC)(link)This. I've been arguing for like a decade now that anime would be the perfect adaptation medium for ASOIAF.
