I would just like to disagree in the strongest and most comprehensive terms possible.

This, and I think we may be better off halting our endeavors to create intelligent robots since they're inevitably going to be treated like shit by the rest of humanity, just like every sci-fi has predicted. This very secret and its replies are excellent support of my fear.

But mostly it's because I was a receptionist for a company that had an experimental "intelligent" robot in the lounge with me and everyone went out of their way to trash talk it the way an asshole would to a real person. Just because it was there and it was "fun." Guess nobody thought interacting with it in a nice way would be "fun."

This doesn't necessarily bother me in the way that it bothers you, because actually existing robots are not generally intelligent, and they often have negative social roles - whether it's being used by employers to substitute for human labor (which is fine in principle but not if the benefits aren't equitably shared) or being used as agents of social control and domination (like those security bots they've built to harass homeless people, or surveillance drones, or what have you). So it's tricky.
