Can't disagree more. Some of my all time favorite stories are about exploring what kinds of sapience and emotion robots are capable of. And what kinds of relationships with humans can come out of that.

Though I will say that, personally, even just the word "soul" tends to make me suppress a bit of an eyeroll (cuz, atheist), so the whole "do machines have souls" angle is something I can 100% do without. But whenever the question of souls comes up in stories about machines, I just substitute my own atheist version of what might be meant by "soul."

I'm an atheist too and as far as I'm concerned soul is Black music from the 60's
