I remember freaking out when my dad picked and ate a chive in front of me when I was 5. My mother was extremely paranoid about food (wash veggies multiple times before eating, never eat anything that's anywhere near its expiry date, if a hair or something lands in it throw the whole thing in the bin) and it scared me so much. My dad was just going "mmm yum" and I was crying and going "YOU'RE GOING TO GET SICK AND DIE NOW NOOOOO"

My dad was fanatical about organic food when organic food was the sole province of dirty hippies, which he was. No white sugar or flour, no table salt, no preservatives, no artificial colorings or flavorings, and nutritional yeast and spirulina were common condiments.

One day on a camping trip, when I was eight or so, he pulled out a package of all-natural, no added sugar “cookies” and asked my friend and I if we wanted any. My friend said they looked gross and I chimed in that they looked like they had worms in them; I was expected to follow my dad’s super strict diet, with the end result of my becoming a compulsive hider, hoarder, and eater of sugary and greasy processed snack food.

My dad shrugged, bit into a cookie, chewed, a pantry moth caterpillar wiggled in the half cookie in his hand, my friend and I screamed, and he proceeded to smile and eat the rest of the package, larvae and all.

I eat fruit and veggies out of my garden all the time, but I always check for insect damage.
