108: Well, everybody's sexier in the manga. There's this one pic of Hibari all filled with battle lust that's just.. *fawn self*

126: I liked it, but I'm not in the fandom at all. I thought it was a great way to further separate Batman from Bruce Wayne, both in people's minds, and to make it harder to find out his true identity...

129: I think that maybe you've got too much time on your hands...?

131: Really? I don't believe in any gods, but I often wear crosses or other religious symbols as mere decoration. I've never thought about people mistaking me for a christian. Of course, I live in a post-religious country, so people will in general assume that you're not religious until proved otherwise.

132: The sexism in shonen manga can be staggering, but you could pick out the ones that aren't sexist, couldn't you? Like Full Metal Alchemist, D.Gray-man, or Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, for example? And if you're willing to try other genres, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Princess Tutu, Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, or Slayers are all really great anime with strong female leads. And then there's a lot of anime/manga that's not sexist when it comes to female characters, except that there hardly are any...

137: I'm exactly the same. O_o

156: But how do you know that the specific people you hate would have joined your fandom if they hadn't had Naruto? *is confused*

It's not just shounen. There's a lot of Shoujo that makes me want to stab the mangaka in the face as well. In my sample I have Boys Over Flowers because the love interest ALMOST RAPES HER and the main character seems to find it only mildly offputing. *screams*

I've read/watched most of the series you suggest (and btw if you don't already know ALL of Arikawa's stuff is gold) but suddenly my standards have gotten so much higher it's even more frustrating trying to find something new!

Oh, I know. Believe me, I know. I tend to stay away from shoujo on principle, and only read/watch it if it's recced from several sources that have similar tastes to mine. Heh, yeah, I'm that annoyed by the genre...

Even Fruits Basket and Ouran, both of which I loved at the start, I had to put down in disgust at a certain point (though the Fruits Basket anime is great, you just have to stay away from the manga).

but suddenly my standards have gotten so much higher it's even more frustrating trying to find something new!

Gender isn't a factor for me when it comes to relating to characters, so in many cases I can be happy with series that simply don't include female characters in the main story. I mean, Saiyuki is one of the best manga I've ever read, but the female characters are all bit players, so to speak. Though that's mostly because of the story, so it doesn't bother me.

On the other hand, I'm reading Katekyo Hitman Reborn right now, and while the story is engaging, the main character an original take on shounen heroes in many ways, the relationship between the main characters interesting and gripping, the female characters are pretty much all plot robots. Plus, they all behave as if they were raised in Stepford (if you haven't seen The Stepford wives from 1975, you should, heh).

May I ask what it was in Fruits Basket that got to you? I'm reading the manga and I like it but am wondering if I sort of glossed over something.

In Fruits Basket the sexism was actually a minor thing, and not what mainly got me to give up, but it was still annoying. When Akito's secret was revealed I was incredibly disappointed; I'd thought it was very interesting how "his" insanity was expressed in a way that traditionally codes female, with the hysteria, illogical demands and outbursts, the selfish manipulation, and so on. Turns out it's because Akito was a woman. *sigh* So typical.

But really, Akito is not a bad character, and I could have ignored my disappointment over her simply becoming yet another hysterical woman (who will no doubt be saved by the love of a man in the end) instead of breaking some interesting gender boundaries in characterisation (all right, so it really annoyed me, haha). What really got to me was the dismissal of homosexual relationship as a silly thing you can play around with before you find your true love. Which is someone of the opposite sex, of course.

I mean, Fruits Basket had a lot of ambiguous characters, some who even clearly confessed their love for someone of the same sex, but that's only used for comedy and/or forgotten completely when the "right" heterosexual person to love comes along.

This is typical for shoujo manga (hell, it's the mindset of a large part of the Japanese society, so I shouldn't be suprised); it can start out interesting, but it ends up enforcing the tired old gender roles almost every time anyway. It's so sad, because a lot of these sereis have had some incredible potential.

Sweden (Stockholm, to be more precise). There are religious people here, but it's not the default, so to speak. There are a couple of specific areas with a higher percentage of christians (small towns out in the country, generally), but otherwise religious people are considered a bit... weird. Even the party calling themselves "the Christian Democrats" don't dare to say out loud that they're against abortion, for example.

You know, we had a state church until 2002, but people in general care so little about religion that most people didn't notice when state and church was separated...
