I don't mind when others print my stuff off but I do get a little miffed over the idea that some people apparently download fics and edit them to their own preferences, as I've been made aware of from past FS secrets. There's nothing inherently wrong with it but no writer wants to know that their work is being actively fucked with in some way by a total stranger.

Eh it doesn't really bother me, personally, never even occurred to me it might annoy some people. I don't think it's really 'fucking with' my work to change names or something. It's a lot less than, say, taking other people's characters and putting them in situations the original author never considered, or might not even wish to consider ... like fanfiction ...

I've actually been considering quitting fanfiction, this being one of the reasons. There are a surprising amount of authors and actors that don't appreciate fanfiction and lately I've been wondering if maybe a few of the points brought up in their arguments against it hold water.

Why is it so offensive that people would download and edit your fics? They're not masterpieces of literary fiction, ok. There's so many fics with bad writing that I would edit except I'm too lazy to (and good but ATG fics that I would like better if I can search and replace the names with the characters of my OTPs except again, I'm lazy).

Do you seriously have to ask why a writer wouldn't be flattered by having their work edited? Come on. Use some common sense. Just because you're okay with it doesn't mean everyone is going to be.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like they're going to be sharing the edited work with anyone but themselves.

NAYRT - If someone preferring a different nickname for a character, or wishing you'd used "cock" instead of "dick" or "come" instead of "cum" in your sex scenes is enough to ruffle your ego feathers...*shrugs*

Just tell yourself no one ever does this to your fics.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So much edge there. Keep it classy.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but what do you think edginess is

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sharp sarcastic language and/or being overtly callous in regards to how people feel.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I take back my comment in regards to the edge. I misread the post and I apologize - that was my fault.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Same anon.

After reviewing everyone's comments, I have admittedly been too sensitive. I'm running low on sleep and having a bad day, not that it's a valid excuse. People have made good points after rereading everything more thoroughly and more calmly.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hope you feel better, anon!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I appreciate it.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
As if people haven't taken print literature in the past and "modified" the wording wholesale to suit their interests, or did you think King James commissioned a translation of the Bible out of the goodness of his heart only?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Terrible example, what with the Bible having lost much of it's meaning over various translations, revisions, and rewrites over thousands of years.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why this would bother you. They're not disseminating the altered fic. They're the only one to see the changes.

Personally I don't care at all if people make alterations to my fics for their own personal preference. Unless a lot of people are doing it and they're all making the same changes, in which case I want to know what they're changing so that I can consider whether I want to alter it in the original fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does anything bother anyone? It just does for some.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
the irony of a fic writer being bothered by ppl altering their work... it's amazing.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
lol ikr

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Unlike the others, I can definitely understand why this would bother you. I'll admit I've done it (mostly to edit out purple prose or repeated words in a fic that I'd otherwise enjoy), but I wouldn't ever tell the author. Unless they were searching for critiquing or something, I guess. Probably not even then.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
but I wouldn't ever tell the author.

How is that remotely in doubt? Like, I don't think it's at all weird, but I'd still never tell the author I'd done it. That would be weird, and rude.

I highly doubt anyone in this thread who is doing this is telling the author about it afterwards.
