No. I am not a published book author. I just write bullshit fanfic in my spare time. And then I learned that a lot of it was problematic because I was young and naive so I removed it from the internet.

Tbh a lot of the fic I saved is stuff that got deleted because of old-archive purges and LJ comms going up in smoke, it just made me learn from that era of the internet and realise that it could happen to Ao3 too.

For all I know some of the fic I have has been deleted, but I don't go back to fics I've read so I have no idea.

Also fyi: I've deleted my own fics before, I doubt anyone's saved them anywhere, but if they have: I don't care. People can have a copy of it to themselves to read when they want even if I don't personally like the fic anymore. I put it out onto the internet and as such accept the fact that people can and will save it if they want. No skin off my nose.

I’m weirded out by this attitude, because I feel like reuploading someone’s pulled work is disrespectful, but reading a downloaded work is like rereading a favorite book. Sometimes authors might hate their earlier work and wish it wasn’t out in the world, but if you’re that kind of author, I think maybe you shouldn’t publish stuff in the first place. But then, I’d be flattered someone liked my work, so long as they didn’t claim it was theirs or something.

I can grow though? I'm not the fanfic author I was at 14? My fic then contained messages I would be horrified to give now. I don't want those messages getting to anyone. I have a kind of platform if you will to be able to erase that the way published authors can't.

You can add notes to old works on AO3 explaining what you hate about your old works and then orphan them, though.

As it happens yes I am under the same name. And I am utterly mortified about some old works but there is a difference between thinking 'that is shit writing/plot/grammar' and 'urgh I don't like to send that message to others'.

But as others have mentioned the orphan option....it happens I don't trust that. I am not mortified about any of my work. I just feel responsible.

The Orphan option on AO3 isn't full-proof; I've tested it before and Googling copied text from the fic descriptions, even after being supposedly fully Orphaned, can reveal the original author's username sometimes.

No, once something's published, it's published. I spent twenty years in bookselling and I can only think of one instance in which something was taken off the shelves, and no instances in which people who had bought books were compelled to return them for destruction. It's part of the act of publishing that the work goes beyond the author's control.

It’s not a matter of respect. I treat fanfic like I treat traditionally published works and if, idk, Neil Gaiman showed up at my door offering to refund the purchase price of my Sandman comics if he could set fire to them on my front stoop, I’d say no and shut the door.

Yeah but you would have already paid him for those comics. Respecting his work, purchasing it.
All I did was put up some bullshit story and hope someone might like it but then think oh, maybe not. Or what about those who need to NOT be connected to that anymore but orphan-ing it isn't an option? In years gone past things that happened could disappear. Now it doesn't. Ok. Guess I will just be unnerved by it.

Post to ff.net instead of AO3? Or has ff.net enabled downloading? Maybe just post it on Dreamwidth? AO3 isn’t the only game in town, just the most popular. I’ve been disagreeing with you all over this thread, but if your foremost concern is total control over your work and specifically making downloading it a pain in the ass/impossible, I guess just don’t upload to AO3 to start with.

I see the downloading feature all the time. I choose not to use it. Just like back in the day I didn't screenshot lj or fanfic.net. I thought I'd appeal but if it is on deaf ears....no point.

If someone would download off ao3 then they will screenshot it off another site, or reverse, then no matter if I say otherwise they will take home their fic I guess.

I'd hope they wouldn't but, eh.

Put an author’s note on your stuff asking readers not to download it? Not everyone will respect your wishes, but it may mean less copies floating around. Actually, now I’m wondering if AO3 authors can even see download stats. I don’t post there, or anywhere, really. I posted some anon fics to a not-actually-kinky kinkmeme in the dying days of LJ, but I’ve literally never had a social media account of any kind.

AO3 doesn't allow you to see download stats, which is a bummer because I'm curious. I have no problem with people downloading my fic, and I would love to see how the download stats compare to kudos/hits/bookmarks.

This wouldn't work, there are tools like fanfiction downloader where you paste the link to the story in the program and it'll compile the story into a single file and save it as a html or epub file.
