They don't pay a huge amount upfront, but the residuals are huge and long-lasting. This is why Giselle from "Enchanted" didn't become an official Disney Princess: the money they would have had to pay Amy Adams to use her likeness as well as her voice was too much even for Disney.

The only issue was using Amy Adams' likeness. I don't think using someone's voice is generally ever an issue -- if an actor wants a lot of money to use their voice, you hire another, less-known actor who does a credible impression and you're fine. With Giselle, it was because the original character was obviously based on her likeness. They'd either have to redesign her to the point of being unrecognizable or pay Amy Adams a lot of money.
