It's not that weird. Effective use of background music in a scene affects me strongly so I get that "It's the song from the thing!" all the time. And if one scene is already stuck in my mind as being associated with that song, it is often rather jarring to hear it in another context.

I swear I'm the complete opposite. Someone will be like, "Oh remember the scene in X with Y song, it was so moving!"

And yeah, I hardly ever notice/recall background music.

I only really notice a scene's background music if I knew the piece beforehand, and that usually breaks my immersion in the story and takes me out of it.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all, OP! I don't do it that often with Supernatural, but I do it with other shows.

Hahaha, I've done that!

Bad Moon Rising has been ruined forever for me.

Cold Case used music so effectively, that I've rarely been affected by how other shows use music, as it just doesn't generally seem at the same level. There are a few songs that are exceptions, though, and I will associate them with the shows where they affected me. So I don't think it's that weird that you've developed these strong associations if the music worked well for you.

I get how you feel. Like how I felt about this show taking and using one of my all time favorite songs that I had associated with a wizard character of mine, the song I had thought of as his theme song.

I can't say I agree with your secret, because I'm always up for seeing how a show uses a particular song, whether it's been used well by a different show or not. (I think I saw Damien Rice's beautiful song Delicate used in like four different shows before finding a usage of that song that I loved more than all the others, in Misfits.)

However, I will still give you an enthusiastic fistbump, because I LOVE finding new music through TV shows, and I have a total weakness for music montages, and I do strongly associate certain songs with certain shows.

I saw The Stand back in the 1990s and it forever ruined "Don't fear the reaper" for me. Whenever I see that song used elsewhere, I just get pissed off.
