I just got sick of trying to decipher the cryptic metaplot stuff

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What metaplot?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
All the VFD stuff or whatever

I barely remember the details now but it was definitely a whole thing

I did, for the same reason. I was expecting, being ostensibly a series for kids, that it would all get better in the end, so the more depressing it got, the more I had to keep reading.

...

Fuck me, right?

That's fair, OP

Oh, I couldn't get through it reading like a ditionary in places. I only got through a few chapters of book 1 before giving up. When every 3rd or 4th word is defined, I'm not gonna read it. I get that it was trying to build kids' vocabularies & that's a really good thing that I wholheartedly approve of. It's tedious to read though, when you know all of the words.

I get it if the joke didn't land, but it wasn't trying to teach kids new words. It was joking or using words in a manner that was unexpected.

It felt like it was going in circles. The orphans go somewhere, Count Olaf appears, the orphans have to leave, repeat over and over.

Same. I couldn't even finish the first book.

+1

The book said "if you want a book where anything happy happens ever, go read something else," so I did. Never regretted it.

Ditto. The humor isn't enough to mitigate the depressing parts for me. Same applies to the TV show.

The books are more funny than anything. Edward Gorey style humor but still funny.

I got halfway through the first book and gave up because it was so depressing. But then I thought, "It's all in the title, why was I expecting anything different?" and have never bothered to try again.
