I like how it subtly encourages piracy. The binary, the hooded figure.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
eh personally i wasn't encouraging piracy or anything, i haven't pirated anything in years besides games that are literally no longer being sold

i can't say i suffer any moral outrage at the idea of idk, someone taking an apk of some mtx-filled f2p mobile game and hacking the shit out of it though

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with pirating is that if a person is still consuming the show or whatever, they may still end up supporting it in other ways. Frankly, just posting about it in fandom is a type of support because the more popular a show is, the more popular it tends to become.

The only way to protest practices you don't like is to shun the product completely.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's not the only way to protest by any means

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Er... not sure those things say "piracy" at all, but okay?

Ahaha, I thought it was a cool image to use.

To be honest, it's hard to imagine the gamer community in general ever caring about solidarity or the rights of anyone, since the gamer community at large is a bunch of venal jackals who care about nothing, so a bunch of journalists and other folks on Twitter jumping up and down and yelling about it is probably as good as its going to get.

Also, no ethical consumption under capitalism

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
well, yeah

i wasn't saying there's a truly ethical way to do anything, more than if those unethical practices are things they cared about for real, they'd make statements with their wallets about what they want, regardless of ethics, because companies don't care about those, but they do about money

they're not gonna do that, though.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of us do.

When a game pisses me off because of content or the flatulence of the designers, I vote with my wallet and stop subbing/buying it. (TBHJ, I judge a little those friends who bitch but keep paying.)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
good on you, same here

too few of us around, too many of bitch-yet-buy

You really think that the rats pressing the lever in the Skinner box among a whole lot of other rats doing the same thing are going to stop? Change needs to come through regulation, top down.

Yeah I just keep reading this as 'onion' in my head. XD

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's a nice thought, but more likely, when people don't buy the games, if such a tactic worked, those who worked super hard on it during those unethical practices during crunch will end up out of work because the studio goes under.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the logic of a hostage situation you're using there. Disruption over the short term may harm existing firms but creating a more equitable labor environment is still a necessity.

Sadly, this secret is true.
