Why is this a troll? NAYRT, but you'd be surprised by the number of people who insist that having a preference NEVER HAPPENS EVER in real life and that all characters should be switches.

And god forbid they are 'stereotypical' tops or bottoms because hoo boy, now you're in for it.

I think it's because many slash writers are women and they're (rightly) turned off by the idea that being penetrated = submission. It's different of course with men, because it's a role they freely choose.

No, it's because for a long time fandom conflated sexual roles and preferences with really rigid stereotypical personality traits and sometimes people still see it in that light.
