[Fan BingBing]

China is an increasingly totalitarian and borderline genocidal dictatorship and we should be more concerned about that, but also, this, uh, seems like a wildly strange angle to take here

It’s not just Fan Bingbing. It’s wild how there was a period in time where many countries were critical of China (hell, Hollywood made so many movies over Tibet) but most of the countries just want to be good friends with China now. Reading about how the Organization of Muslim Cooperation praised China for taking such goot care of its Muslims :))))) pissed me off.

I mean, I agree her "missing" period is ominous, but isn't it a little much to assume she got repeatedly raped and was secretly imprisoned? Not saying it's impossible, but you are mentally putting together your own little fanfic about what actually happened in this woman's life.

But... there are a lot of social justice movements and political power pushing up against this. It's just against China and its human-rights abuses in general. Like, you get that #metoo has worked to a point in liberal democracies specifically because the democratic system allows that kind of protest, right? A #metoo movement specfically about Fan BingBing would be like a movement to get one POW access to a lawyer. I.e. well intentioned but essentially pointless.

That is an awful lot of speculation there.

It's also possible she was just in hiding or she bribed someone to stay "missing" until things died down a bit. Or she might have just been in prison or was being held until they were sure they had a full accounting of her assets and she could pay what she owed and any fines.

I mean, yes, if what you speculate happened, happened, then it was wrong, but I'm not sure why you think everyone would assume it did, unless I'm missing some accounts from other people that this happened to.

You're writing a non-con fanfic, hold your horses.

Considering her net value, I find it much more probable that she was lying low somehwere, at most scared shit that most of her money would be taken away from her and/or her career can be over (at best, annoyed that she will have to give up some of her money and pretend she is ashamed), but I do not find it very probable that she couldn't bribe her way out of the country if needed. With that kind of money, you can really get a way with a lot (and she did get a way with a lot for a long time).

It was most likely a terribly unpleasant experience, but definately a much less horrible than that of any person who crosses the government and has much less money. Why do you want to see more support for her, and on the basis of your conjecture, than for Uighur women kept in the detention camps? They might be victims of sexual coercion or abuse as well? (they are statistically more likely to be than one of the richest women in China)

What happened to Fan BingBing was fucked up because it clearly demonstrated that China is not a "normal" country, but I have toa dmit I find myself hard-pressed to consider it something I have to be very vocal about when there are so many, so fucking many, worse things that happen in that country (acctual FACTS, not just suspicions).

Well, maybe because we do support those women who came out as part of #metoo movement and said that something happened? We do not go around supporting women we suppose must have had been abused? That's kind awful? To impose that kind of narrative and victimhood from the outside on somebody without any proof?

i read an article last month (in WaPo maybe??) that said she was under house arrest for a while. so in a way she was imprisoned, OP, but the rest of this scenario of yours is conjecture.
