Be as specific as you feel comfortable being.

Some idiots decided a certain Mission (that wasn't even theirs originally) was important enough to fight a losing battle with the Mexicans and die for. We're supposed to remember them.

Susan Smith. A woman who murdered her children by pushing her car into a lake. She then lied for nine days saying a black man carjacked her and took her car. She did it because a guy broke up with her because he didn't want a family.

Oddly, a family going to visit the children's memorial died after their van rolled into the lake at the same spot.

I was familiar with the case but not that aspect. That's crazy!

Yeah, it was a family of seven. They ended up moving the memorials and getting rid of the boat ramp after that.

We've had a couple serial killers. Like Arthur Shawcross (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Shawcross or https://www.rebelcircus.com/blog/arthur-shawcross-evilest-serial-killer-probably-never-heard-his-crimes-are-too-much-for-people-to-talk-about/ ) and the Alphabet Murders (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphabet_murders ).

One teenage girl was murdered and tortured in particularly brutal ways that the media for some reason was quite explicit about.

Another's house was broken into, she was kidnapped and never seen again. My mom's friend has a relative who moved into a house (that she had no known connection to) where some stuff was found in the attic that was thought to have belonged to her and she was believed to have been held there for awhile, but the former owners were investigated and the property was searched and nothing else was found.

Another who was kidnapped outside a local mall.

A dude who killed his girlfriend and was acquitted, then later someone moved into his former house and found pictures of the murder under the floorboards, he was convicted of perjury because of double jeopardy, then he deservedly died an apparently painful death after getting released from prison.

It's the capital city, so a lot of crazy political stuff happened "here" by default.

Other than that, since it's a basically an oversized village a lot of "small" crimes in comparison to national news stories are big news here. One fucked up crime involving university students was turned into a major non-fiction bestseller by a well known literary author, and was adapted into a movie a few years ago.

Basically, the girlfriend held weird dinner parties where she drugged her boyfriend in front of her friends (who had apparently been told about the drugging). She eventually murdered him with a lethal does of heroin at one of these gatherings.

My small village was unexpectedly embroiled in a far away country's government tax evasion scandal - was on that country's national news and all. News crews from that country tried to find people to interview on the street but the only people around during that time of day were some little old ladies. It was quite hilarious.

Also, a lady from my village died at a major US amusement park.

A few years ago, a tornado about a mile wide set down on the west side of town, and then went right across the city for several miles before lifting up again. I think fewer than 200 persons died, but the level of lost property was apparently some kind of record.

Few hundred years ago it was the birth of Kings and Queens of Scotland and that we had the first civilian assassination, in Scotland, by gun on our high-street.

In more recent times, we have ended up with a small-ish music festival and Karl Lagerfeld had a fashion show here.

Oh and we had an unnatural earthquake one time when there was a small explosion at the chemical plant a few towns over.
