you know, op, I neither agree nor disagree, I'm just really wondering now. Have we come so far and surrounded ourselves with so many narcissists who double down that we can't remember what it's like for someone to go through a redemption arc?

believablity in characters can change over time, because our culture changes. I'm just wondering if it has, or if you've simply been so browbeaten by shitty people existing that you no longer believe that people can actually stop and reevaluate their lives, even if they're fictional characters.

Perhaps I'm cynical. But it's not that I've forgotten what redemption arcs are or what it's like for someone to go through it. I simply think it's a rare phenomenon in real life. Even the term "redemption arc" generally refers to fictional characters, not real people.

I don't think it's impossible, mind you. It's just rare, particularly in people who are that adamant that nothing they ever do is wrong, who take zero responsibility for their words and actions. In Eustace's specific example, I could better believe that he could effect a dramatic change if it were written in a more gradual, credible way... but it's not.
