Same. Also because I like when the writer has different ideas. It fuels my daydreams. I don't want the fanfic I read to be what I watch in my head already.

You have never known the pleasure of letting a few years pass until you've basically forgotten it and then reading one of your own stories like someone custom wrote the perfect story for you? 'Cause it's beyond awesome.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-21 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
as someone with very poor memory and very specific tastes, this is too true lol

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They say that because they want you to quit complaining about a lack of your preferred fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But so?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So.... keep complaining? And keep getting told that? And keep hating it? IDK

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Complaining without contributing is massively annoying.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Which is a jerk move, IMO.

I feel you, OP. I have a lot of rarepairs and nobody every writes fic for them. In my case, I did end up writing fic for one of my pairings because why not? It's shitty and the pacing's bad, but it's something.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm, not sure if this would help but here goes. I'm not a great writer either but I really wanted content for my ship, which was seemingly nonexistent online at the time and so I was forced to write a fic myself after waiting forever for someone else to do it. The fic wasn't good but I posted it anyway, thinking that maybe there were others like me that might have been hoping for something, anything, featuring this particular ship. And... indeed. There were a couple others that had been waiting as long as I had (years) and were happy to have found my fic - here's the kicker though. Shortly after I posted my fic, other writers started posting theirs for the same pairing. It was like a green light or something. What I'm getting at is that even if you don't write well, sometimes posting a fic can get the ball rolling and other writers might be inspired to write for the subject matter of your dreams. :)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but that's really cool, nonny! :)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
da I did this too. Ten years ago I made a friend who shipped the same rare pair and we're still friends now. She taught me a hell of a lot about writing, too, so I've improved immeasurably, though practice helps enormously, too.

Even as someone who feels fairly comfortable with my writing, I don't particularly like "write it yourself" in the passive aggressive sense as it's unhelpful and not every fic writer wants to take on an 80 chapter epic if it's a complicated idea, or feels comfortable writing smut if it's a smutty idea etc. I do say "write it yourself, you might be surprised!" if it's someone who obviously wants to do it but is hesitating.

I do get the sentiment behind "be the change you want to see" but it's not always that simple.

Only thing I don't agree with you here is the idea of writing but not wanting to read your own fic. I re-read my stuff from time to time, because it's an idea I enjoyed and wanted to see. Sometimes the writing expanded beyond the daydream into something much more as well. Sure, with the older stuff in particular it leads to some cringe moments. But I absolutely will reread old fics of mine if I'm feeling starved of that content. I get not everyone operates this way though!

Are charity fic commissions still a thing? Or could you offer fanart for fic, if you can art? Or maybe set up a fic exchange. Or produce other content like meta, gifs, anything to get the ball rolling.

There are many routes to getting the fic you want to read.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom is about contributing too and there are more ways to do it.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
But what has that got to do with their secret?

Same!!!:(

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I'm not sure that people realize it's really dumb, impractical advice or they're just trying to shut down the discussion.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
The latter. Literally no one cares that you can't find fic you want. And no one wants to hear about it.

I feel you, OP. I go through stages of writing fics, and I only ever wrote fics in really small fandoms. However, I've written fics that I've never shared with anyone. Just silly little drabbles of stories I want that I know no one else will give me. Maybe at least give that a go? Don't feel like you're incapable of writing a fic just because you don't think you are a good writer. Even just writing it script style with characters speaking to each other is easy enough to write, especially if the ships/pairs you like are in film or tv fandoms. The point of writing fan fics, IMO, is for you to enjoy it. It's not so much about what other people will say about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I feel you OP and I have friends who just don't get it.
I'm usually active in Fanfiction writing, but now I'm in a stage in my life where I just don't have time for it (and I don't mean 'I don't have time'. I eat, sleep and work and that's all I have time for in my life at least for the next few months. When I find spare moments, I'm tired and I find it difficult to put the mental effort into writing) and I don't have much time for writing, but I have time on a bus commute to read.
But even when I did have time to write, sometimes I don't want to create the content but I want to read it. I want the surprise and to discover what will happen or just to read someone else's take on an idea. Or sometimes I just want something in a vague category, but I don't have any story ideas.
Creating a story is one thing and I enjoy rereading stuff I've read, but reading works by someone else is a different experience and the for me the two aren't always interchangeable.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Also to add, I've gone through stages in my life when I've had things like a personal loss that has killed my inspiration and desire to write, but it doesn't necessarily mean that I no longer what to consume fan works

(Anonymous) 2019-04-24 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I get it OP. But fanfic writers aren't here to just cater to your specific whims. So it's just annoying when people complain that they want a fic a certain way but won't do anything other than complain.

Have you tried your fandom's kinkmeme? Because prompts there don't always have to be smutty (g-rated fluff can be your kink), and fills are literally fanfic written to your specifications. Granted, some memes are more active than others (the Phoenix Wright kink meme is over a decade old and still going strong, whereas both Avengerkink and Capkink are dead). If your fandom is too small to support its own meme, there's also [community profile] smallfandomkinkmeme.
