I suspect his decision/attitude is pretty common among people who are just "outside" of any group they have some kind of connection to. It's possible he enjoys the label of "oppressed" but it's also possible he wants to be proud of being something at all.

Of course, I'm just speaking as a half-breed who was never included in the things involving either side of my heritage, so maybe I'm being more charitable here than I ought to be.
