How old do your fandoms skew?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-23 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And do you fit the typical demographics of your fandom?

My main fandom is Pokémon so I'm a decade or two older than the primary demographic, though right in line for the periphery demo lol

I don't really know, as I'm not really in any fandoms at the moment (and I'm sure really big or long-running franchises I'm into like the MCU and Doctor Who have a pretty wide age range among their fans), but I've got a story:

I started watching Star Trek with TNG when I was a kid in the 80s (although I'd seen some re-runs of the original series and I'd also seen Star Trek IV). Not only was I aware that there was older Trek, but I was hyper aware that there was an established fandom and I was but a baby trekkie. Skip ahead to when the first reboot movie came out and imagine my surprise when I heard people referring to Trek fans who started with TNG (or even DS9 or Voyager) as "old school" fans! It was made weirder by the fact that the folks I'd consider actual old school fans were and are still around. I got over my surprise and now I think it's neat that Star Trek has so many entry points, and I suppose the fact that who is an old fan and who is a new fan is now a matter of perspective is kind of nice. One less thing for fans to be divided over.

Most of my fandoms are older and the people that are still active in it are mostly older too. Demographic wise, a couple of the franchises were intended for younger audiences but most of the original fans have now grown up.

I'm in Sta Wars fandom and there's a ton of ppl of all ages, but I'm an old fart and tend to, for the most part, stick with the rest of the old farts (and by old farts I mean old enough to have seen the OG movie when it was first released).

in the '80s I was given a lot of shit for supposedly being "too young" to like the Beatles. (I was in my late teens through late 20's at that time.) Now I see high school kids and even twelve year olds who like classic rock, heh.
