That area doesn't have any more accidents than any other area with similar level of travel. Many ships have been recovered so they are not 'missing'. Most of the ships have proven to have sunk because of natural occurrences like storms.

Isn't it slightly weird in that there's an area that throws of electronic equipment and compasses and that's why it's so bad?

It was an unusually strong signal picked up by a radio telescope in 1977 that is the closest thing to what an alien transmission is expected to look like that anyone has seen. It has never been observed since, though, despite repeatedly checking the same direction in space. No one knows for sure what it is.

The astronomer who originally noticed it while reviewing the data wrote "Wow!" on the computer print-out.
