That would have been good but I also think the show benefited from having a a character like Mal around somewhat. They just should have taken him less seriously and given him less narrative weight

Who is this man and why does he look like a Ken doll?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I think that actually is an action figure

It's supposed to be Mal from Firefly played by Nate Fillion though

Nathan Fillion, apparently. For a moment, I thought it was Jason Bateman.

I agree. Mal is the least interesting Firefly character. I don't hate him. But the show would be just as good or even better without him.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard disagree. Jayne was the worst male character anyway.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing could have saved this series. It was cringeworthy even in the permissive early 2000s, and now it's downright unwatchable. All the male characters are power fantasies are various types, and all the female characters are wank material. It's like being trapped in Joss Whedon's id. It makes me feel embarrassed for him.

(Still a huge Buffy fan, though.)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't go that far.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, check out this hot take. Did we see the same show? Firefly? Are you sure you don't just have a hateboner for Whedon like so many people have developed?

'Unwatchable.' Yeah, no.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so fucking weird how the Internet is sometimes with this stuff. I spent 10 years being critical of the show and saying it wasn't as good as the fans thought, and ow everything has gone reverse.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Second this, and hard. That is one hell of a hateboner AYRT has.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, like I said, I love Buffy.

But yeah, I hate Firefly, sorry about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems like it's pushing the phrase "power fantasy" past the breaking points to call Wash and Book power fantasies

Also - as annoying as Joss' tropeology gets - you can still like the female characters of Firefly as female characters, even if you think they're also Weirdo Joss Fantasies

Agreed.

(Also see: Dollhouse.)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I never got into Dollhouse, so I'm not sure what your point is. I know, just based on the basic premise of the show, it seems hinky but that doesn't necessarily mean anything

I don't like any of the characters on Firefly. They're all tropey af.

This.

I actually didn't get 'power fantasy' vibes from any of characters and the use of the term in relation to Firefly strikes me as very strange.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that it's embarrassingly easy to pick up on Whedon's kinks from watching his back catalogue, Firefly included, but that's also not a particularly rare thing. Plenty of shows have the writer's kinks out and proud for all to see. Look at The OA for a recent and very obvious example.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The OA is so bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
No way. Mal was great, and I loved his chemistry with everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. He's exactly the type of character that works as the center of an ensemble. Zoe was great, but without restructuring the show and her character, I don't think she would work as the center of the ensemble.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-26 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well put.
