in most of my fandoms, too. Having a canonically virgin character that's very popular brings out the purity wankers like you would not believe!! You are literally the devil if you dare write fic or do art about them gettin' a little something-something. I'm guessing (talked about this with a few other older fans) that because sex is strange and frightening to the youngsters in fandom, they feel safe latching onto this character and so react very emotionally to other portrayals.....

And usually disguise this emotional reaction with a strident "This character is ACE and here are my ten thousand reasons why!!"

I'll take ace headcanons over "asexual headcanons are bad and wrong they infantalise characters and are [depending on character homophobic and/or racist]" because I hate hearing how as an asexual I'm just a precious innocent child.
There's room for all the things and the purity brigade are taking it too far but at least asexuality is being acknowledged now, like bisexuality is, not by all but it's a start.
